I normally dont post opinions on hot-button issues, but after listening to several national sports podcasts and TV shows this evening, I have to throw my two-cents, for what its worth, into the Ray Rice story that developed today when TMZ released video of the NFL star striking his then-fiance until she was unconscious. I am appalled by the support being given by many to this spineless human being, who lives his life as part of the most-popular sport in American culture. Ray Rice is not only a disgrace to a sport I love, but he is a disgrace to mankind. I clearly understand that he is not the only man who doles out domestic violence on women, and I accept that Janay decided to become his wife regardless. But, that doesnt change the fact that this disease in our country has to stop. The NFL, which under the adminstration of Roger Goddell has failed on issues of domestic violence, has the opportunity now to go forward with a zero-tolerance policy. And, I hope they do. The League, as well as the Ravens, failed to properly investigate the allegations, and instead paid tribute to Rice in the preseason on their website. Its sickening to hear Ravens coach John Harbaugh (whom Ive never held much respect for anyway) speak of his, and Rices character during this ordeal. Its unfathomable to hear fans speak of their support of Ray extending any bit beyond prayer for him and his family. I heard fans say, We dont know what Janay said or did to provoke this. Thats a mute point. There is no excuse for this behavior. Period. Today, something the league overlooked, became bad business for them. Its only speculation on my part, but I find it hard to believe that a video leaked by TMZ has not been previously seen by anyone in the National Football League. There are men in this world who treasure the women in their lives; there are those who are alone, and spend their days hoping that the love of their life, someone to hold and love in tenderness, will come along; and, there are those who have lost, to death or otherwise, those special women they loved so. These men would give anything to keep, find, or have one more day with, the loves of their lives. And, then theres this man, and so many more like him, who resort to brute force, to maintain control and domination over these women who have chosen to be with them. I fault Ray Rice. And may his cleats never again touch the green grass of an American football field.
