I normally ignore pass-along tag games, but this one came from my brother (Bernhard Johann Hamaker) and concerns books (which are a great love of mine). I will list 10 books that have changed my life. These come in the order I thought of them. 1. Scripture, which includes The Bible and The Book of Mormon: these have taught me many life lessons, and the morals by which I live. Christ taught us to be accepting and helpful to the people around us. 2. A Clouds Growing Day: this is a book by brother is currently writing. The way he describes language and personal interaction is beautiful and right. I see the world differently because Ive read his thought process. 3. The Dresden Files: a grand tale of a snarky P.I. wizard. The author writes every character to their fullest depths, and each book is better than the last. His insight into human nature is astonishing. 4. The Once and Future King: The way White speaks in his novels is a wonderful mashup between medieval and modern. The topics his characters discuss are thought provoking, his view of animal behavior is unique, and who doesnt love the crazy Merlyn? 5. Harry Potter: I was the same age as Harry, and grew up alongside him. The adventures are fun, and I still have questions for Rowling. I am proud to be a Hufflepuff. 6. Hamlet: my favorite work of Shakepeares. His questions and comments on life, death, and salvation are beautiful poetry. And not just Hamlets famous soliloquies, but the Kings and Laertes as well. Theres more comedy than most realize in Shakespeares tragedies, too. Hamlet getting kidnapped by pirates is never mentioned in discussions, but is a fantastic moment. 7. Enders Game: teaching the world that kids are truly the future, and that empathy is a real, and much needed power. 8. The Old Kingdom series: I dont like zombies, but love this. Fighting the dead through music, girls rescuing princes, and a kingdom that needs to be rebuilt from near anarchy. Heck yes. 9. The Fault in Our Stars: this book asks the big questions, like Why does a sandwich with egg in it automatically become a breakfast-sandwich? Cant you eat an egg sandwich without having to label it for a specific time of day? 10: and Redwall: this is the series that got me to love reading when I was small. Boj was reading it, and would read some out loud to me and my sisters. When he quit reading it to us just a couple chapters in, I was too curious about what happened next, so I started it for myself. Its a cute kid story about animals, and is very black and white on good vs. bad, and I loved it to pieces. I can hardly read it now because its so sappy and predictable, but I love it for what it got me into. It was a good start for a small girl. If youre willing (no pressure), Id like to hear from Rebecca Voigt Whipple, Deborah Tardis Seaman, Jenna L. Born, Scott Born, and Megan Hamaker. You all read some amazing nooks, and Id like to hear what your favorites are and what changed you.
