I noticed something interesting. When other parents play the My Child Must Be More Severe Than Yours card I always roll my eyes because I assume theyre being dramatic. They inevitably go on to say,My child does X, Y and Z, and pretty much describe the same kinds of stuff that Evie does yet doesnt strike me as that big of a deal. Anyhoo, the interesting point came when I was watching a video the other day. The child in the video was flapping his arms, squealing and *seemed* oblivious to those around him. This was clearly to show how impaired he was. My immediate thought was,Whut?, as I looked out at her stomping around the kitchen, making grunting noises and *seemingly* ignoring me. Thats when it hit me. Her stimming is so very much our normal that I tend to notice her strengths more than her weaknesses (NOT that I think stimming is a weakness but according to their standards it is). Would a film crew coming in here to film her show a more impaired child to someone who didnt know her? Why do some parents see their children as being impaired to the point of considering them a tragedy when the rest of us just see ours as normal? *Sorry if this got all disjointed. I had to stop halfway through and put on the Backstreet Boys.
