I now think I have a probable guess at why the humans have evolved to be this way. I think as technology develops and economy grows, the gap between the rich and wealthy class and the labourers who worked for the rich increased dramatically. Between those, lifestyles began to differ significantly, and thus led to two different paths of evolution. Even in my time, the labourers are pushed to the less luxurious parts of the city, into subterranean regions. They work continuously for the wealthy class, who enjoy much luxury and have nothing to fear. In this kind of society, the intermarriage between these highly differentiated classes grew less and less frequent, and hence led to evolution into two different races of humans.
