I often get the question about how we come up with the names and information about these horses. There are two groups and we typically collaborate together on names for tracking purposes. The page or group of people I directly work with is the South Steens Wild Horses page. On South Steens Wild Horses page, you will find albums of individual horses, and albums of bands, foal crops by year, range info, etc. While I photograph more than one herd management area, my home HMA is the South Steens and a bulk of my photos are from that one in SE Oregon. SSWH is a group of 8 of us long-time photographers who know the area and horses well. We all work together to fill one another in on the horses, herd and band dynamics, as well as range conditions. SSWH is a nonpolitical page, and is just about the horses- I think you will enjoy seeing a variety of images by a variety of longtime photographers and admirers of the South Steens mustangs. As for how names come to be- If there is a horse we really want to track as photographers/observers, than we pin a name (... easier to remember than a number or color description... like.. pinto LOL) there are a few ways we go about this, but typically the photographer who first photos a new mustang or foal unseen before has first dibs on the name, or can defer to the group. SSWH peeps will also work together to find a fitting name, or we may enlist the help of the readers as well- which is a lot of fun. Overall we work together and it works great to help track the horses. We may not name them all, just those that we have decided we as individual photographers or several of us want to track/follow do so, and build an album of info on them- which we all use.
