I once had an ex who identified as a freethinker but was also a conspiracy theorist (even she acknowledged it), an anti-vaxxer and preferred alternative medicine over the evil Big Pharma... Moral of the story: Using the terms freethought or freethinker interchangeably with atheism or atheist is erroneous. Its a misnomer. Skepticism specialized in one specific area of belief does not a skeptic make. In his The Ethics of Belief, The Duty of Inquiry, philosopher William K. Clifford eloquently teases out an apt premise of what it means to be a freethinker: It is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence. Now, nobodys perfect, of course. I see this as an ideal principle to strive toward with the tools of self-awareness, humility and intellectual honesty girded about you to best perceive and decipher notions and convictions that may rely more upon emotional investment than soundness and substantiating evidence.
