I only caught the closing comments on NDTVs Big Fight. Interestingly, the topic up for debate was The Idea of India, an issue I am very fascinated by. A BJP spokesperson, whose name I forget, claimed that we are the oldest civilization in the world, and according to Darwins Survival of the Fittest theory, their must be some superior quality in us, as a country, due to which we have survived. We need to find this quality, he said, and hone it. That is the idea of India. Sir, may I direct you to Pakistan, where much of this oldest civilization was based, and may I also urge you to understand that none of us can claim descent from the Harappans? May I, in addition to this, also ask you why the idea of a glorious future must depend on a historically-inaccurate superiority complex, when it can simply be based on the ideals enshrined in our constitution- the only important text not written in the Vedic age?
