I opened the books panel on my Facebook page yesterday, and it occurred to me that I have read ( and listened to ) most of the suggested books there. All the years that I worked in a purely visual job, I was blessed to be able to sit at my monitor and multi-track. ( Words do not interfere with my concentration while retouching or painting. ) When most others in my trade were listening to music, I was gobbling up all the stories I could get my hands on. Anyone who works in this way should take a serious look at Audible if they can afford it. It would be hard for me to count the books I have read and listened to in my life. I have been putting a lot of thought into what makes a good book great; what makes some books resilient; standing up to the test of time in an ever-changing world? My simple answer would be that the really great books elevate the reader above the minutia of every day life, and show them characters who rise above all odds to keep their integrity; that keep striving to protect their virtue no matter what the cost. The true heroic characters value virtue more than their own lives. A book that comes to mind is Le Miserables by Victor Hugo. The main character John Valjean who is a prisoner has his life turned around by the sweet act of kindness of a priest who seen some good in him, and Valjean changes his life from a life of crime to a life of helping those around him. The real heroic characters fight the inner battles, not the outer ones. The real stories elevate the common character into a state of God’s grace. This world is starving for virtue. So, I have been putting a great deal of thought into the rest of my own story, ( that sounds good, "my own story" ) :-) and the answer came to me this morning. I know now how all three books will end and I am sure that the story will move my audience. ~Gregg
