I overheard this conversation in my imagination. It was between King Big Mouth (well call him BM for short and his surf, Lemming. It went something like this. King BM: Ah Lemming! Look all around you! This is all mine! All of it. I love the wealth and prestige of being king. Lemming: Yes, my liege. King BM: But you know what I love even more? The control I have. Its...its...its intoxicating!! Lemming: Yes, my liege. King BM: As I survey my kingdom from this rooftop I can see all of my property and workers and the statues of me... although that one in the town square? They got my nose wrong. Lemming: Yes, my liege. King BM: Now where was I? Oh yes. As I survey my kingdom and the control I have over it......ya know, theres another thing that bothers about that statue. Those pigeons. They fly over it and do their business on it. That really bothers me. Lemming: Yes, my liege. King BM: Well, whatever. Control over the land! And especially the people. They must do my bidding. And...you know Lemming, back to that statue. Have you noticed the graffiti thats showing up on the base? Its rather disturbing. Down with the king! Absolute Power Corrupts, Absolutely! Why, thats just nasty. Who do they think theyre talking to? Im the king! Im their lord. Im their master! Lemming: Yes, my liege. King BM: Yes indeed!! Control over everything I see! Thats the ticket! Yes my control is...man, that statue is really bugging me. I dont understand it. I mean, I control the law, the wealth, the commerce, the people. But I cant control what happens to that statue? If I cant do that, what kind of king am I? Am I missing something? Is it possible that I cant control everything? Lemming: Yes, my liege. King BM: Really?!!! Lemming, if what you say is true, that I cant control everything, why, that would kill me!! Please Lemming, isnt there something I can control? Lemming: Yes, my liege. King BM: Then Lemming, as your king, I command you to tell me what it is that I can control! Lemming: Yourself. And there you have it. And hopefully youll have this too: Peace.
