I penned this poem the other day, thinking about the SUFC awards banquet I was to speak at. It addresses the way I feel about one of our greatest accomplishments of the season, restoring a broad sense of unity or putting the united back in United ... the original United. Found Both old hearts and young yearn to be part, Part of something greater than themselves. The Spirit craves to be one or at one with God and man. It pines for the chance to pour itself out in service of a worthy cause. Whence this impulse and how it is stirred, Is the divine mystery, which in The hands of true captains, generals, prophets and poets -- The priests and priestesses of our hearts -- is set aglow and turned to work in troth. With family, friend and stranger, too, We bend our will to common cause, and With stirred hearts and purpose true, we, not I, make all haste to That great end to which we have sealed our hearts, and pledged our hands, and set our firm minds. Nor will we lift our eyes nor rest from Furrowed field or toil, till voice is heard, The whistle blown, the measure taken of our task – if won, Or lost or drawn it be, nor mattereth it, for we be one, and I am found. ‘Tis meaning born of unity, not Victory, fame or coin, we crave, but As one – setting self aside – nor for glory, nor for pride I, we, hold nothing back, strike out as one. Who e’er they be, I, we, are one.
