I post on here quite a bit and really enjoy this site. I want to tell everyone about a life changing experience I had just after moving to Aransas Pass - the summer of 56 when, like most 13 year olds, I was beginning to experience the pangs of growing up. It was after a midnight show and as I was leaving with 3 other boys my age(who shall remain nameless) we encountered there on Commercial street at the intersection of 361 one of the old men who lived on the streets in those days. We began to have our fun with him, teasing, grabbing his hat, giving it back and then taking it again. He tried to swat us with his cane but we were too quick. We were circling around him on the sidewalk(about where the HEB parking lot is now) when this black 49 Mercury came screeching to a halt by the curb - out piled 5 high school guys, all 17 or 18 years old. They ran us down, rounded us up and then as the old man watched gave us a severe tongue lashing about why what we were doing was wrong - never hurt us physically even tho they easily could have. They then made us go one by one and apologize to the old man. Then they left and so did we. I quit running around with the guys I was with that night not because I was any better than them but because I made a decision that night my life was gonna be better than that. Never knew who those guys were, doesnt matter, Im just thankful they did what they did. Didnt mean to get so long winded here - Aransas Pass was a wonderful place to grow up. I think that night was an important step in my life followed by many more from the people there who helped me grow up. Coach Ashmore, Coach Segal, Mr. Hassler, Mrs. Gunter, Mr. Brown, Mr. Hamrick and many more.
