I posted a video on YouTube a couple of years ago showing the method I use for cleaning records. Its simple, its easy and its based on scientific facts and common sense. Best of all, it works. However, there is so much BS floating around about record care that I still get idiots who believe the hype commenting negatively on it. I tell them not to believe it. Look, folks, records are made of the same plastic that a milk jug is made of and the best way to clean a milk jug is with soapy water and a sponge. The same is true for records and, no, getting them a bit wet WILL NOT harm the labels. It is a rescue method for used records, not something you do for regular maintenance. Assuming you handle your records the right way to start with, there should never be a need for wet cleaning. Ever. A good carbon fiber brush will remove dust and fluff. You dont need any sort of groove treatments, chemical cleaners or voodoo. All of that is hype put out by people who want your money for their machine or product. There is also a nifty side effect to cleaning an LP with detergent that I didnt find out about until after I posted the video. It kills static dead forever. It seems that a molecule thin layer of the soap is left behind on the plastic and it acts as a static barmier. Its not enough to effect tracking in any way, though. I read it in an article by Reg Williamson from 1981 It seems that great minds think alike. Here my video. You can hear the whole theory behind my method and see it in practice. Ive saved records that looked like theyd never play again this way. youtu.be/lR8vJXNSHs8
