I posted earlier about Director Koller resigning from DSS after all the turmoil we have been through with the sub-committee hearings only to let you know the update on what is going on. I did not comment on the link. I have been working diligently on this sub-committee since January after being assigned to it to investigate issues going within the Department and because of child deaths and child abuse cases in this state. I have read some of the comments. No one ever said every problem at DSS was because of the current director but when the director was hired 3 years ago the problems should have gotten better especially those regarding child safety. When those issues become concerns of the citizens of South Carolina and we are asked to investigate that is what we do (if we didnt we would be criticized for that). This is not a victory to have some one resign as some would think but this is a step forward to be able to make necessary changes in this agency. There have been too many distractions and it is not the fault of the Legislature or politics as some would claim. This is the fact that a poorly mismanaged agency has led to over worked employees which caseloads that are unmanageable. Children have died - Would children die anyway? Maybe? Will more children die or be injured? Maybe? But we have to make changes. There are a lot of hard working employees at the Department of Social Services who should be applauded for the hard work they have done over the years. There are many who have left because they felt they could not do justice to the job given them but do not put this on the backs of the legislatures who have tried to uncover it. If I have done nothing else for the last six months I have worked hard to find the problems and fix them. I will continue to do that - this problem is not over. We are just at a turning point in the road where we can make changes.
