I posted the following comment on another Tent thread, and it was suggested I repost as a new thread. Here it is: My question relates to how followers deal with sources that are at once thought of as demanding fealty but objectionable to modern mores. In both Orthodox Jewish and Islamic courts, the testimony of a woman generally carries less weight than that of a man. The stated reason in Jewish texts is due to the lighter intellect of women; in my inexpert check of Hadith (Sahih Bukhari 3:48:826) the reason given is virtually the same. In the Jewish world, there are some who point to balancing comments elsewhere in the cultural (about greater binah in women, their importance in the home/child rearing which is more significant than in the outside world etc) and feel comfortable with it. There are those (probably most non-orthodox and a few.orthodox) who question the contemporary relevance of said statements and thus question the long-time, handed-down assumptions of the religion. I am curious to know if there are Muslims in the Tent who have similar/analogous conflicts, and if so, how they deal with them.
