I posted this late last night on my main FB page. Was too tired to share it with this group, so here it is now. Update is that she is doing amazingly well, barking at everyone this morning and walking fairly well. Weve got our fingers crossed. We have had a very eventful 24 hours. We were due to head to Cape May today for our annual spring/early summer week there. I came home from work last night about 7:00, to find Jim sitting in the yard with Scoutie in his lap, and he told me she couldnt walk. He had found her stuck half in-half out of the dog door--no idea how long she had been like that, but the disposable pee pad there was all ripped up and she had abrasions on her knee and hip. It looked like she must have been stuck there for a while and had struggled unsuccessfully to extricate herself. She couldnt stand up at all and kept falling over. She was extremely listless/lethargic. I was ready to take her to the Emergency Vet to have her put to sleep. She had peed all over herself, and I just couldnt take her in that condition, so we gave her a quick bath. She didnt seem to be in any pain, so I decided to hold off, cuddle with her all night, and take her to our regular Vet this morning, if she lived that long. I took her into our bed and just held her. I hardly slept all night. At about 2 AM, she tried to sit up, so I took her outside and low and behold, she could stand and walk a little bit. She had to poop, and she was able to do so with me holding her on her sides. I took her back to bed and we dozed, then at about 4 AM, she got antsy again, so I took her out again and she peed. We had the alarm set for 6 AM, so we could get her over to the Vet and be there when they opened. Jim took her out then, and she peed again. He gave her a cookie and she actually ate it! She took a big drink too. I started to think that today might not be the day to send her to the Bridge. We got her to the Vet and they were so wonderful! The Vet thought she was a little dehydrated and in pain, despite her not whimpering or crying or wincing with movement at all (which was why I thought she actually wasnt in much pain). We talked about options, and decided that given her age, we would consider her to be in Hospice care, and just keep her comfortable for as long as she has left. Dr. Porter gave her 150 ml of subcutaneous electrolyte solution, stopped her Novox (Vetprofen), and started her on tramadol, prednisone, and famotidine. I gave her a dose of tramadol when we got home from the Vet, and then we left for our trip. We took her out for several potty breaks on the drive, and gave her more to drink. She seemed about the same as she was early this morning. When we finally got to Cape May, I got her out of her crate and carried her to the back yard of the house we rent. Wouldnt you know it, she just walked all over that yard and didnt stumble or fall!!!! She took another huge drink and peed again. She doesnt seem back to normal quite yet, but boy oh boy, is she ever MUCH improved!!! I know we have limited time left with her, but I am thrilled that we didnt have to put her to sleep last night. Shes sleeping on the memory foam pad on the floor right now, and seems content. Fingers crossed that she makes it through the week. We have an emergency Vet phone # just in case, but hope we dont have to use it. Say a prayer for her, everybody. It doesnt need to be said that she will never be left alone again. Jim has promised to take her to work with him from now on, so we never have to worry about her getting stuck in the door again. Now Im off to bed, as I am completely exhausted.
