I posted this to a thread about BMI suing a venue over copy right licensing for cover bands they hire. Curious about how other musicians feel about it. I have long toyed with the idea that it might be preferable to require musicians to purchase a flat fee cover license for music performance. Consider this. It would eliminate a fee on the venue that is based on seating capacity rather than butts in seats. It would allow more small venues, which operate on very slim margins, to provide live music. It would act as a financial discouragement to the 10s of thousands of casual musicians, many of whom are willing to work for free, that suppress compensation for bands. This may result in fewer musicians chasing more gigs for better pay and the audience will be entertained by a more committed and likely, more capable artist. If we play for pay, it is reasonable to be required to hold a business/performance license.
