I prescribe this stretch all the time for folks with tension in the shoulders and neck. The levator scapulae are the muscles on either side of your neck that elevate your shoulders into a shrug. Do these stretches regularly between your massage appointments to reduce tension and pain. Perform on both sides and hold the stretch for 5 good deep breaths. Repeat 3 times for each side. These are great to do just out of the shower in the morning and again in the afternoon. https://youtube/watch?v=-Z5Lq0a4EEg The stretch can be modified to do standing so long as the shoulder you stretch away from is depressed.
