I pretty much cant stand where indie music is right now. I havent hated this much new music since the days of the mellow mafia when I was in junior high school (I mostly like that stuff now). And now Im hearing more and more Jangley 60s style stuff creeping in. I dont know whats worse, young musicians INTENTIONALLY trying to sound like Mike and The Mechanics or the thought that theres an impeding invasion of Grassroots sound-alike bands. The Paisley Underground stuff was cute enough on the first go around but I dont think I have the patience for another round of looking backwards. And yet, Im about to tell you that this record is the best new thing Ive heard in ages. If you would have told me that Id love a record that sounds like Pavement playing Paul Simons Graceland I would have guessed that you were on some special crack. Not the ordinary stuff. I dont know much about Mac and, for the time being, plan on keeping it that way to keep from coloring how I hear this record. On first listen, it has a very demo-y sound to it, but on repeated listens, a surprising amount of depth and thought can be heard in the production. The guitar work is fantastic throughout, but not in a weedily weedily way. Lots of clever guitar wrapped around and wound through the songs. It sounds like its just plugged in direct to the board with almost no effects. Im only now getting to the lyrics, since Im unfortunately one of those people who cant hear them immediately. It all sounds like Charlie Browns teacher to me until repeated listens open it up. So if the lyrics are all chop up kittens and join NAMBLA dont blame me. Its just my personal quirk that lyrics take a longer time to reach me than most people. This isnt the new revolution in music that Ive been waiting for. One that will pulverize the current need to keep looking backward, but it will do nicely until that revolution arrives. youtube/watch?v=0HQqXllXpfQ
