I promise Ill stop posting soon, but Im fixated on this topic, for many reasons, and have to speak my mind on a few more things: 1) if you suffer from depression or suicidal thoughts, please try to believe me when I say I care and that there is hope and there is a future. Please dont hear Genie, now youre free and think escape route 2) if you have lost someone you love or are just trying to understand that Genie, now youre free is not an encouragement to die but rather a statement of hope that at long last, despite the life of hurt and confusion, at least in eternal slumber there is peace and rest. It doesnt mean that was a great choice! But it does mean that we acknowledge that the struggle of that person, much like a cancer victim, is no longer eating away at them heart soul and body. 3) I am a Christian. I love God and I believe in Heaven. I lost my mom to suicide 3 painful years ago this Thursday. And I believe that as she was a believer, I will see her again. I do not judge her for her act of so called weakness; I do not applaud it either. But I do understand. 4) if all of this still sounds too illogical, or your response is one of logic, please remember this: when a part of your body has been numbed, it cant feel pain or pleasure; it doesnt respond correctly to what your mind tries to tell it. That is what depression feels like to many of us. A numbing that blocks out all reason and logic. 5) take a moment please and count your blessings and honestly survey what you believe about mental illness and depression. And please please please dont let this be just another passing figure whose tragic passing got our tweets for a few days and then we move on. Let it inspire hope and promote healing and fuel honest open dialogue about this debilitating beast.
