I ran outside this evening on dusk to find out what all the commotion was about when my six year old started screaming something about the dogs fighting a cat. Next thing i saw was my little white female Bichon Frise come tearing up the back stairs with an enormous bat screaming and screeching and flapping its gigantic black wings while firmly affixed to my dogs back!! Words cannot describe the mixed emotions of hilarity and sheer terror experienced at the sight of it! All I could think was that at any minute the bat was going to take flight complete with little dog still attached or (worse?) the dog was about to run in through my open bedroom door to her usual hiding place under my bed - still with bat attached!! Luckily my quick thinking, extremely clever and brave little (but larger) male Bichon jumped at the bat and manged to drag it off his little friend before she ran through into the house! Mr Harvey Norman, being the brilliant, obedient and well trained little creature he is, awaited my further instruction rather than ripping the terrified bat to shreds and dutifully dropped the (did I say enormous already?) bat on command (drop it) then backed off on command (leave it) -insert applause for Mr Norman here- the bat gathered its wits and managed to fly off unharmed. Nanna (the little female dog ridden by the bat) emerged from the house some moments later with a look on her face that clearly communicated WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT ABOUT?. I wish I knew how the hell a bat came to be riding her around the backyard myself! I dont think I have ever witnessed anything more surreal or hilarious in my life!
