I read a really great blog post yesterday, which I cant find right now, that says that academics are overworked because they dont have one boss -- but have to appeal to multiple constituencies (students, departments, colleges, the University, national and international disciplines) simultaneously. I do like the fact that no one is looking over my shoulder constantly, but it does make things stressful when you dont always know how to succeed in a complex institutional environment.
