I read a very interesting spec this weekend --an award-winning writer trying to reboot a beloved old franchise. The script was excellent, exactly what it needed to be. But -- and this is a big but -- it was missing a raison detre, something to make it really fresh, unusual, unique. If theres one thing I learned from grilling agents and managers for over a decade writing my column for Creative Screenwriting, its that GOOD is no longer good enough. You cannot simply write a fine example of whatever the genre is. It has to be really out of the box to get people excited and propel them get off their asses to champion something. This makes things doubly challenging for us writers, because so many genres have been tapped out. So what can you bring to your racing script, your monster script, your rom/com, that no ones ever done before? THAT is the secret to getting noticed.
