I read also that the top WWII ace of Australia, Clive Caldwell, who had achieved 28.5 German, Italian, and Japanese kills in both the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk and the Supermarine Spitfire. 22 of Clive Caldwells German and Italian kills were in the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk in the North African campaign while his 6.5 Japanese kills in the Pacific Theater were in the Supermarine Spitfire. Clive Caldwell had been sent to defend Darwin, Australia after the Japanese surpise attack on Darwin, Australia which was only 2 months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In 1943, Clive Caldwell flew the Supermarine Spitfire on his first interception and shot down 2 Japanese planes over Darwin which were a Nakajima B5N Kate torpedo/light bomber and Mitsubishi A6M Zeke fighter and his other kills consisted of another Mitsubishi A6M Zeke fighter, two Mitsubishi G4M1 Betty bombers, and his final kill before the end of the war was a Kawasaki Ki-46 Dinah reconnaisance aircraft over the Arafura Sea.
