I read an interview with Nati Cano a while back, about mariachis. Mr. Cano was asked about his secrets on what makes a mariachi band successful. His response was: 1. Voice. To become a good mariachi you have to play in the mariachi style. Being a good musician doesnt cut it. Its a different game. And the rule is that you have to sing. If you dont sing and play, youre not a complete mariachi. 2. Unity. When we sing as a mariachi, were part of a group. We become one. So, when were singing something very happy, it belongs to all of us. Its like a family. Everybody becomes important when were singing. 3. Heart. I dont know about techniques, I dont want to know about techniques. All I know is about the feeling. Either you feel it or you dont. When you sing, you should give that expression, that feeling to the song. Dont just breathe it and sing it, dont just sing the melody. If you just lay back and leave your arms hanging and say, Im the greatest singer in the world, it wont work. You have to feel the song, you have to understand what youre doing, and then project that to the audience. If you dont feel the song, the audience is never going to feel you. This video was taken last night at El Pescador Bar and Grill, Carson. Mariachi Los Camperos, sharing these three secrets to their audience. A Los Cuatro Vientos, performed by Raul Cuellar. What a great tribute to Mr. Cano! May he Rest in Peace! This song is about a man who has a love in his heart and all he wants to do is shout it from the rooftops so everyone knows.
