I read quite a lot of papers at work about disease genetics, but this one is sad. Its about the genetics of the Ebola outbreak, has 85 authors of which five have since died from the outbreak. Science posted a bio of them, and I wanted to mention just one. Mbalu Fonnie was a nurse-midwife who had spent thirty years treating Lassa fever, a haemorrhagic fever very like Ebola. She specialised in the treatment of serious cases of the fever in pregnant women. She became infected while caring for another nurse who was infected with Ebola working at the hospital while pregnant. Thanks to Gretchen Vogel at AAAS for writing the piece, which includes brief biographies of the other authors who died.
