I read the following about Our Lady of Guadalupe in a booklet: Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe had shown to a native man who was converted to Catholicism. His name was Juan Diego, and he was near the hill of Tepeyac, in Mexico City when he heard a gentle, sweet voice calling his name. Puzzled, he looked around and saw a beautiful beyond imagination lady. Her robes shining like the sun, and the rock upon which she stood was projected bright rays of light. The earth around her was radiating the colors of the rainbow. He fell to his knees in awe. My son, she said, I want you to go to the Bishop and to tell him to build me a sacred house here, so that I can console and help all those who seek me and give them all my love. Realizing the identity of that Heavenly Lady, he hurried off to the Bishop and told him about her manifestation and her request. The Bishop scolded him and said, This is only your imagination. Juan went back to the Heavenly Lady and told her that the Bishop wouldnt listen to a poor, humble Indian man like himself. But if she sends a nobleman, the Bishop will believe the message. I have chosen you, Juan Diego, to be my messenger. Go, do as I ask of you, The Lady said. The next day, Juan Diego attended the Mass and told the Bishop the same of what the Heavenly Lady requested. The Bishop said, You must bring a sign from her, if not, dont let me see you again. Juan couldnt return to see the Heavenly Lady the next day because his uncle, who was seriously sick, had known that his end was near and asked for a priest. Fearing that the Lady would delay him, Juan changed his route during his way to call the priest, but as he came to the Tepeyac hill, she stopped him, and he informed her about his uncles illness. Dont worry, your uncle is now well, she said. And it was her first miracles.” She asked Juan to go to the top of the hill and gather flowers. This is the sign that you shall take to the Bishop, so that he will believe my words to you. She said. Despite his being knew that there are no flowers there; but rocks, he went to the top and found the hill carpeted with flowers. He gathered the flowers and put them in his tilma, and when he unfolded his tilma before the Bishop, a flow of fragrant flowers fell to the floor before the amazed Bishop, and appeared the imprinted image of the Heavenly Lady, just as Juan had seen her on the hill. The sacred Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the only physical manifestation the Holy Virgin has ever given to the world. To this day, Her Image remains in her sacred house at the foot of Tepeyac, where each day she is visited and revered by thousands of her children. In Her message, she said, I shall be there to listen to your cries and your sadness. I shall be there to cure your grievances, your misery, and your sufferings. Juan Diego was given the custody of Her Basilica, where he remained until his death. Pope John Paul II beautified him on May 6, 1990.
