I read this aloud 3x. Author Kim Cheng Boey, a Singaporean who migrated to Australia, writes about his journeys. And the way I understand it, travels are never, ever just about physical movement over space - whether its over a week, a year or a lifetime. They come packaged with internal journeys: a movement of the soul, between stations. This was written at a time when he was uprooting to Sydney, and decided to take a year off to travel. He is in Calcutta: Perhaps this yearlong trip is to delay the landing, to cushion the arrival in the new country. Strange that I should be traveling westward from where I am meant to settle. Perhaps I am hoping that somewhere along the way, I will discover a sense of arrival, a turning point, the journey entering into a different stage, some kind of meridian, so that some day I will be able to look back on it and see my life rounding a corner, a falling towards rather than a flight from home.
