I read this article with the deepest empathy for Josh and his mother. Mental illness leaves us feeling so helpless, with only our loved ones to rely on for support. I find it hard to reconcile that I work in a cardiac surgical ICU where an unfathomable amount of money is used to keep patients alive with artificial hearts and lungs. Yet, NEARLY NOTHING is available to help otherwise healthy individuals who long for better health but are tortured by mental illness. I was asked by the emergency room at my own institution what they could do to help our son? They had nothing to offer. Nothing. Meanwhile the whir of helicopter blades Life Flighting patients in from afar to receive the world class care our medical center provides. My heart goes out to all of you who are trying to cope with this, and pray that none of us has to lose a son this way.
