I read this earlier today on the Husker Army site (Matt and Steves site). It is written by a former US Military person and fan who has grown up Nebraska Football. It really is an awesome piece and reflects on how the fans of this site and all over Nebraska feel and think. If I could give a pre-game pep talk: Gentlemen, My name is Darren Robinson, born and raised Nebraskan. It is an honor to stand before you in this locker room. A dream for many, a reality for a few. I have been a Husker fan all my life. Ive watched as many games as I could on TV and have been to a few. This place is magical! Ive followed the Huskers during my time in the military, being awake at 3 am half way around the world to watch, knowing I needed to sleep for my shift at 6 am. Ive cheered in victory and cried at defeat. Priased out loud and defended to almost blows for my Huskers. But there is one moment that sticks with me. One year my son attended the Elite Quarterback Camp here. I was so proud to have the opportunity to do that for him. While he was in camp my daughter and I spent some quality time together. We walked around the stadium, went into the trophy room in the lobby, watched the Nebraska film, it brought tears to my eyes. After a long day of doing all that she said Daddy Im getting hungry, I said, ok lets go eat. As we walked around the stadium I noticed an opening where they were doing construction, I could see the holy land of Husker football, Tom Osbourne Field. There was an opening in the fence, I told my daughter lets go look, Daddy well get in trouble. Sweetie, it will be worth it. As we walked in and got closer to the field I noticed something not seen by many. 4 simple words. Some may think they are just words but the more I thought about them that night after a good meal at Olive Garden and my daughter in a pasta induced coma soundly in her hotel bed. The words got to me. They made me feel proud, a new kind of Proud. Although that may have been the first and only time I get to see those words, they mean so much. 4 simple words. I PLAY FOR NEBRASKA. Gentlemen, to this Nebraska kid those are more than just words. Think about them and repeat them when ask, Who do you play for? I PLAY FOR NEBRASKA. Its not just a university you play for it is a State, a way of life from Scottsbluff to Omaha, from Valentine to Red Cloud, Who do you play for...I PLAY FOR NEBRASKA! For the 90,000+ in attendance, WHO do you play for...I PLAY FOR NEBRASKA!! For the roughly 1.5 Million residents that cant make it to the game, WHO DO you play for...I PLAY FOR NEBRASKA!!! For every farmer and his family harvesting that precious corn listening to his AM radio, WHO DO YOU play for...I PLAY FOR NEBRASKA!!!! For every small town bar and pub packed with red clad fans, WHO DO YOU PLAY for....I PLAY FOR NEBRASKA!!!!! For every Soldier, Sailor, Airmen, Marine, and Coast Guardsmen carry the N around the world, WHO DO YOU PLAY FOR...I PLAY FOR NEBRASKA!!!!! Remember gentlemen, you are at NEBRASKA. We are behind for you good, bad, or indifferent. You are part of our family and believe me in this State family is everything. So as you head out on that field and you here the cheers its not just fans that are cheering for you. Its your family, we are your mom and dad, brother/sister, grandma/grandpa, cousin and friend! Its not just a university. Its THE University of NEBRASKA! Your University, Your State, Your family. On your way out remember what I have said, read those 4 simple words. Burn them into your heart, then say them out loud... I PLAY FOR NEBRASKA!!!!!
