I really enjoyed this SPARK. Everything seems to happen for a reason!! Love John I went grocery shopping one week at our local supermarket. For some reason, I had cash with me, which was very odd because I always pay with a debit card. So, maybe that day I was a bit more careful in my selections because I didnt want to select more items than I actually had cash for. We have a large family, so I normally spend close to $300 every two weeks at the store - which is the amount I was carrying in my pocket that day. To say I was surprised that day when my total grocery bill came to just over $200 is an understatement. I was proud of my purchasing savvy. I took my groceries out and loaded them into my car and returned my shopping cart. I had just gotten in my vehicle when I heard a knock on my window! There was a young woman standing there. I rolled down my window and she starts crying and telling me how she had lost her job and had three kids at home. She asked if I had anything - even $10 to give her because they had no food in her house. She said that she had come this store that day to beg because her oldest child had asked her if the reason they had no food was because she had been a bad girl. Now, this woman could have been totally scamming me, but I reached into my pocket and gave her a $20. I also advised her to go around the block to a store that was a bit cheaper than the supermarket so that the $20 would go farther. She walked off in the direction I had pointed. Now, I was curious. I wondered what this woman would do with the money that I had given her. I drove around the supermarket and into the parking lot of the store I had referred her to. I crouched down in my seat and proceeded to watch to see if she would show up. She did. She walked right into the store. I got out of my car and followed her in. When I came up behind her, she had a loaf of bread and a box of cereal in her basket. She was looking at the fresh fruit as if trying to decide what would provide more for her family that she could afford. I tapped her on the shoulder and asked if she had some way to take her groceries home if she were able to buy more. She told me another person she had talked to after I gave her the money had volunteered to drive her and her purchases home. I took the rest of the money that I had out of my pocket and gave it to her - there was probably another $60 dollars there. She started crying again and I just reassured her that everyone goes through hard times. I told her that it is hard to ask for help when you need it, but sometimes you must. Through her tears she promised me that someday, someway she would find a way to help someone else. I have no idea what happened to this woman after that, or even if she really did have children. I dont care. I think I was supposed to be there that day. I think that I was supposed to have cash in my hands that day. I think there was a reason that she approached my car that day. I may have helped her out that day, but she helped me too by allowing me to give to someone. Money certainly does not grow on trees at my house - we work hard for what we have. But that day I was reminded just how fortunate we truly are.
