I really enjoyed this interview with Darren Aronofsky and Ari - TopicsExpress

I really enjoyed this interview with Darren Aronofsky and Ari Handel a lot. Please give it a read if youre on the fence about seeing Noah. I find it interesting that there are people across the Christian blogosphere who are decrying the film for not being biblical enough (whatever that means). While the Noah narrative in Genesis is considerably longer than a lot of other stories in the text (a whopping four chapters), it is still a real bare-bones narrative. All the details about the animals, the measurements of the Ark, and the time periods aside, there are not all that many details about the characters in the story. [semi-spoilers below but not really because come one, this movie is based on a book] I for one was really impressed by the research that the director and writer had to do for this movie. There are things that made it into this movie that I really was not expecting at all. For instance, the film works off of the idea that there are two people groups, one descended from Seth (Noahs family), and another descended from Cain (including the primary antagonist, Tubal-Cain). Another thing that I enjoyed was how Noahs family were vegetarians. The Old Testament puts a huge emphasis on how the taking of life (including animal life) is not something to be taken lightly. Ancient Jews themselves would have been primarily vegetarian with the exception of when they would make fellowship offerings. Finally, I enjoyed how in the film the two sins that get humanity in trouble are violence and a lack of care for creation. Cains murder of Abel is a reoccurring theme in the film as is how humanity thinks of creation as something to be dominated instead of a gift to be tended. Emphasizing these two sins is completely in line with the text. I realize that there are those who will have issues with certain things in the movie, but please ignore the rumors and fear-mongering that has seemed to consumed people when talking about this movie. If youre expecting a movie that is easy to stomach and tells the story of Noah like youre reading a childrens book, you will not like this movie and will be disappointed. But, if you go into it ready to experience a very raw telling of the Noah story wherein the titular character is both conflicted and wracked by real struggles, you will love it.
