I really just want to live in a world where young African-American - TopicsExpress

I really just want to live in a world where young African-American men can feel safe and respected, like full citizens of this country. I know many African-American mothers who are sincerely afraid that their sons will be murdered by police or vigilantes, or will give up hope and fall into despair because of the constant assaults on their self-esteem and stop trying to make lives for themselves in a world that is hostile to them, and I dont think theyre making it up; I think this fear is based on their life-experience and of the experiences of their friends and neighbors, because nobody would choose to have to think these horrible thoughts about awful things happening to someone you love if they didnt have to! African-Americans are as a group much more patient and forgiving of societal attitudes than we deserve for them to be, and were really shooting ourselves in the foot by depriving them of their ability to participate, contribute, and make lives for themselves in this country! No one should have to live being afraid of the police who are supposed to be there to protect them and having to constantly prove that they are not a criminal when theyve done nothing wrong. As long as we let them be treated like second-class citizens and send the message that their lives have lesser value, were encouraging the elements that want to take away all our freedom and human dignity, cause when the canary in the coal mine buys it, theres bad news on the way for everybody; African-Americans are easy victims because of the social mythology about them, but the societal elements that victimize them wont stop there, so we have to draw the line against the bullies!
