“I really like the fact that the attention from the veteran players really pushed the level of both groups pretty high,” Hitchcock said. It was “a good sign,” as Hitchcock is prone to say, but the Blues only have to think back less than a year, when the club started 6-1 and then went through some tumultuous times, to remember that the 2013-14 season is eight months long — nine if it’s a special year. “It’s day one of a very long journey in which we’re going to take things day by day and go through the process of building our team to be successful more often than not,” captain David Backes said.
