I really wish there were more Per Cap Indians able to provide direct funding for Native non-profits. But in a structured, formal way. Like Native foundations for Native people. Imagine how many programs and amazing non-profits could be helped if the tribal members -- and not just the tribes themselves -- stepped into the philanthropic world. And dont get my words twisted. I know there are some people out there who DO donate and DO help fund great things. I know a lot of Per Cap people frequently have to deal with leeches and others trying to take advantage of them. And furthermore, I myself, used to get Per Cap and allowed my own dysfunction to keep me from using it wisely. So I understand the struggle to address ones own internalized dysfunction. This is NOT a rant about how per cap is wrong. This is NOT a rant about how casino tribes are bad or misguided or what have you. This IS a rant about how I wish there were more direct Native funders out there - that Language Immersion programs, Environmental Justice orgs, Youth Programs, Culture programs, and etc can turn too -- rather then depending so much on federal government grants and tribes and predominately white funding sources. More like The People Funding The People. Yah heard?
