I recall in “A Tale of Two Cities” by Dickens, friendship is described as to lay down one’s life. If so, for a marriage to be successful, marital friendship needs to go beyond selfish love. You simply can not play the I’ll give if you give game. To be willing to lay down one’s life is to let go of game-playing, to be willing to give even if you are not being given to. Are you, as a married couple, friends? True friends, especially friends married to one another, want to make life better for each other. Married life should be more than just survival or coping. Marriage should be enjoyed, not endured.
