I received 2 email messages on Friday (but just read them today). One was from Dean Moran. The other, copied here, was from the President of the Alumni Association. Dear Members of the UCLA Law Community, As the President of the UCLA School of Law Alumni Association Board of Directors, I fully support the University and Law School administration in their ongoing efforts to promote a culture of civility and inclusion both on campus and within the legal profession as a whole. Meaningful diversity on campus and the learning environment at UCLA have been issues discussed in multimedia outlets and the news lately. Disrespectful, racist or prejudicial behavior within the legal community is unacceptable under any circumstances and runs contrary to the ideals we espouse within the profession. Moreover, as an alumni community we actively work to combat racism and prejudice in all its forms. For more information, please find below correspondence from Dean Rachel F. Moran. The administration and Alumni Association need your help in promoting our shared values. I believe that we, as an alumni community, have an important role to play in that effort, and can assist the Law School in actively fostering an environment that is supportive of all students. Pursuing a legal education is a difficult task in and of itself as you well know. Without sufficient alumni community support, students may find this worthy goal even more difficult. Students currently at UCLA School of Law will shortly join our esteemed profession and our prestigious alumni community. They deserve our support. As members of that community I encourage you to get involved now to support our students so that they are successful academically and professionally. You can do so in the following ways: * Participate in the formal mentoring program. To learn more about the program, please visit UCLA Law Alumni Mentor Program . * Support the many student organizations at UCLA Law and be available to speak regarding your professional expertise and personal experiences. Please contact [email protected] or [email protected] . * Participate in an open dialogue on diversity with our Alumni Association representatives who serve on the UCLA Law Association Diversity Committee. Please contact [email protected]. * Encourage your firm, organization or company to provide internships, externships, and job opportunities to students. Please visit UCLA Law Career Services . * Host small group lunches or dinners with current students so they may benefit from establishing relationships within the legal community. * Give to the alumni board scholarship, which actively supports students who are leaders within the law school and whose recipients commit to giving back to the law school community. Please go to Make a Gift to contribute to this fund. This list is by no means exhaustive and can be expanded to include any number of ways to support our goal of fostering a civil and inclusive environment at the law school. Even a single persons participation will contribute greatly to this cause. If you have any questions on how you can personally participate in these programs, or would like to discuss how we can improve our alumni community, please contact me at [email protected] and our new Director of Alumni Relations, Sarai Crane, at [email protected] or 310-794-4188. It is my sincere hope that each of us will commit to assist students in pursuing their dreams of obtaining a law degree and becoming an attorney. Toward that end, please get involved today. Kindest regards, Diego Arp, Esq. ’03 President UCLA School of Law Alumni Association Board of Directors
