I received a message last night from a mother asking what to do if her kids friends mother asks if she has guns in her house because she saw an ad on a gun control page encouraging mothers to do that. Im assuming for people in rural areas this wouldnt be a problem, but there are a lot of hoplophobes in suburban areas. What would you do in a situation like this? Have you ever been in a situation like this? There are a few things that I thought of immediately. One thing is that you could try to reason with them about accidental deaths. Mention how there are 42,000 deaths from car accidents, 39,000 deaths from unintentional poisoning, 25,000 deaths from falling, 2,700 from fires, 2,500 deaths from choking, 2,000 deaths from swimming pools, and 600 accidental shootings. Maybe you can use it is an opportunity to educate them. Many gun control people are completely delusional and arent able to reason so that wont work. I wouldnt recommend lying, but you could refuse to answer the question and if she doesnt let her kid come over to your house because of it, then maybe you could encourage your kid to find a new friend. Another the thing is that you could say that you do have guns in the house and if she demands that they be locked up and unloaded you could unload and lock up your guns just for the one visit, let the kid come over, and then when he leaves encourage your kid to find a new friend. By the way, if you have kids in your house then having loaded guns that arent locked up where anyone can find them is a bad idea. You work out your own plan, but Im an advocate of keeping a gun with no rounds in the chamber in a place where you can access it easily but a place where your kids dont know depending on how old they are. If your kid is 6 years old in my opinion they shouldnt know where the gun is, but if (s)hes older, stays home by himself / herself regularly, is responsible, and knows how to handle a gun you can tell them where it is. Again, how would you handle this situation?
