I recently had an interesting hike with the (BCA) Friends of Blaauwburg Nature conservation area. During this walk I learned that sand dunes covered Blaauwburg hill, and that the dunes stretched all the way over Blaauwberg Hill for a further few hundred meters inland, This was documented during the battle of Blaauwberg between the English might and the local inhabitants in 1806. (I think this was the date) I can imagine Cape Town being covered in a vial of sand during the winter months, with the north westerly making visibility and living conditions in CapeTown challenging. So in 1987 ”we” decided to import the “”Post Jackson Willow””, a fast growing alien tree covered the dunes and destroyed the natural dune flora and fauna. This tree produces huge number of seed which is spread by rivers and buried by indigenous South African ants. They lie dormant in the soil and germinate after fire. In recent year “”we” decided to solve this problem. “We” sprayed the whole area with a biological control agent, a gall rust fungus from Australia . This did not work and the fungus left big ugly brown balls hanging from every branch. An ugly fungus that looks like hundreds of cancerous growth covering the otherwise healthy tree. Most branches are so heavy with them that it hangs down to the ground. I did not even want to photograph it. Portion of the battlefield just behind Blaauwberg Hill has been cleared of alien vegetation and the area burned to encourage the regeneration to Sand Plain Fynbos. This area is currently been funded and researched as a joint venture between Cape Town City and the Millennium Seed Bank. The Blaauwberg Nature conservation group are very active with a “”Re-introduction of fauna & flora in the reserve”” programme. How wonderful that there are hard working dedicated people and supporters who’s vision is to conserve, protect and enhance the unique, natural, historical and cultural resources of the area for the enjoyment and education of present and future generations.
