I recently turned these prototype balusters for a restoration project of a fraternity house here in Ames, Iowa that is now registered as an historic building. The one on the left is 18.5 inches, the one on the right is 31 inches; both have 4 square top & bottom sections. Once it has been decided which version is desired, I will be turning between 30 and 40 copies of these, all of them in cedar, which will be primed and painted as part of a new (but historically accurate) balustrade over the main entrance.
