I refuse to take the National Family Pledge. Thanks to Kirsten - TopicsExpress

I refuse to take the National Family Pledge. Thanks to Kirsten Han (spuddings.net/2013/07/31/the-national-family-pledge-bigotry-dressed-up-as-national-values/) and Alvin Pang (breakfastnetwork.sg/?p=6629) for their articles. This pledge cannot be called ‘national’ because it has not been developed in the national forum and echoes conventional views which are not subscribed to by all Singaporeans. The National Family Council, which developed it, appears to have a relationship of some kind with Focus on the Family – its website advertises an August event at the Focus on the Family premises. Focus on the Family, which is affiliated to the American organisation of the same name, is a Christian entity which is opposed to any form of equal rights for LGBT people. I hope the National Family Council – which receives public money – will clarify its relationship with Focus on the Family. It was ill-advised for Minister Chan Chun Seng to support the pledge. I hope he will clarify whether the government supports a specifically religious attitude to the family which necessarily implies opposition to equal rights for LGBT people. Further information on Focus on the Family is available at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Focus_on_the_Family.
