I remember as a child reading a number of either "Encyclopedia Brown" or "Brains Benton" books. One story had the boy-detective discovering that a number of putative cave paintings were fraudulent. The "catch" was that the images featured dinosaurs along with humans. I remember telling this story to my mother, who retorted that this story was in fact inaccurate. As a child, I was too ignorant to dispute her. So at this point I learned she advocated "young earth creationism." Years later, she boasted to me that her church, the Lutherans, were very progressive, and accepted that organic evolution had occurred on this planet. But I suspect she was smart enough to realize there is a contradiction between organic evolution and young earth creationism, so she opted for the "Omphalos Hypothesis." Years later, I remember reading Bertrand Russell suggesting that if we ~really~ accept the logic of the Omphalos Hypothesis, we could just as well assert that we were created 5 minutes ago, "with hair needing to be cut." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omphalos_hypothesis
