I remember being told that if I would be more submissive to my ex that he would stop being abusive. I remember being advised not to give him an excuse. I remember being admonished that marriage is forever and that my servants heart could win him over. These words were an indictment. Despite the fact I was the victim, I was now being held accountable for his actions. I was being told that I could control this man who used terror and violence to control me, and I was failing. Abusers abuse because of who they are. No one has the ability to change anothers heart. Its time we stop blaming the victims for failing to do the impossible.
