I remember having a bit of an argument with an old Professor of Ethnomusicology in Jeruasalem about this. The argument centred around the very noble-sounding idea of cultural relativism, and respecting cutural practices. Hmmmmm.....argument got a bit more complex when I asked him if the meant he seriously expected me to respect Saudia Arabias stupid decreees on how women live, or the selling of 9 year old girls to be wed?????? I am massively a lover of cultural diversity, but this kind of unthinking cultural relativism has got to go and we need to find a place and a framework within which to discuss such matters critically. Please bring back Christopher Hitchens :-)
