I remember that day. I woke up as usual oblivious to the world as a junior in college. I went in to my class and our professor had rolled in the portable TV as we all watched in silence as the events unfolded. I remember an immense fear and overwhelming uncertainty to it all. That night I called my brother and remember crying when he told me he has to go to NY to face an uncertain situation and his unit would likely be called to war. This is the first time I truly understood what it means when people say our military selflessly serve and protects our freedom and shadow us from fears we dont even know about. God bless my brother and all the military, police, firefighters, and citizens who helped us then and continue to protect us now. Katie laughs at me because the National Anthem sometimes gets me misty eyed (sometimes its the pregame beverages) but it largely comes from a deep respect, appreciation, and sense of gratitude for those who serve and protect us at home and abroad.
