I remember the eerie-looking statue of Giordano Bruno in a piazza in Rome...his heresy trial primarily involved his rejection of the beliefs of Catholicism and only in small part his cosmology. He believed, correctly, that our sun is just one of many other stars in the universe. He joined Copernicus in theorizing heliocentrism; however this was not the main reason that he was burned at the stake for heresy.
