I remember the first national coming out day march on Washington. - TopicsExpress

I remember the first national coming out day march on Washington. It was 1987 and I was 19. I was SO scared to even think about it. I couldnt figure out how people could be that proud of being gay. It wasnt cool I was told in school and nobody in that crowd I saw on TV looked like they could throw a football like I could. I just couldnt associate to what I saw. (Plus some dudes were wearing heals, freakt me the hell out). The fear, the pressure plus the AIDS crisis surfacing- UG. A close friend committed suicide becuz he couldnt accept himself which was learned only in his death, an uncle died of AIDS. It was a difficult few years trying to figure everything out. Today, we live in a time that is advancing quickly and while we are not there yet, current and future 19 year old gay people now know they are not alone in this great big world and they have thousands of other options than suicide. Thank you to all those that marched on this day in 1987, thank you to Michael Coty for being the first human I ever uttered those first scary words to :) and thanks to all those who advocate with me for equality today. Im already out and way proud so no announcement here. :) en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Coming_Out_Day
