I remember, when I was 13, taking the only trip to Syria and Lebanon that I would ever make. Baalbeck, Palmyra, the Castle of the Knights (Krak des Chevaliers), Umayyad Mosque, the Convent of Saint George, Street Called Straight, and a wealth of other, breathtaking connections to ancient history established a lasting impression, even now, 50 years later. The Umayyad Mosque of Damascus held two art artifacts of ironic note - the mausoleum of Salahadin, whose second in command happened to be Jewish, and the shrine where the head of John the Baptist was entombed. In the mausoleum, there was a grain of rice that had passages from the Koran written on it. Three great religions. One people. And now shattered.
