I remember when the Tea Party started to grow and come together. - TopicsExpress

I remember when the Tea Party started to grow and come together. The movement of people wanting to follow the constitution and resist tyrannical government instilled hope that people were waking up. I also remember being angry as the left painted the Tea Party as racist, hateful, and out of touch with America. I knew Tea party members and attended some gatherings and could not imagine this to be true. Unfortunately, a few years later, I see a movement that is exactly what I hoped it wasnt. I see posts about how all Muslims are extremists and should be killed from the same people wishing that their brand of Christianity not be labeled extremist. I see the hatred of gays among those whose Savior said, judge not lest ye be judged. And love thy enemies I see racist posts and hatred toward other cultures. I see a gross misunderstanding of the founding of our nation and the nature a precepts of the Constitution. Such as: The Constitution was NOT written with solely Christian values and intent. Freedom of religion does NOT mean a single religion or version of it! This is perhaps the greatest lie propagated about our founding documents and intent of our forefathers. As the government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion... --John Adams Religious institutions that use government power in support of themselves and force their views on persons of other faiths, or of no faith, undermine all our civil rights. Moreover, state support of an established religion tends to make the clergy unresponsive to their own people, and leads to corruption within religion itself. Erecting the wall of separation between church and state, therefore, is absolutely essential in a free society. — Thomas Jefferson I never told my own religion nor scrutinized that of another. I never attempted to make a convert, nor wished to change anothers creed. I am satisfied that yours must be an excellent religion to have produced a life of such exemplary virtue and correctness. For it is in our lives, and not from our words, that our religion must be judged. — Thomas Jefferson The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. It does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg. — Thomas Jefferson So, we can pretend that we dont understand these quotes from those founders that were present. We can pretend we want individual freedom and an adherence to the Constitution. But until those fighting for freedom understand and admit that this country was founded to protect ALL peoples rights to believe and seek happiness in their OWN way, the Tea Party will remain to be seen as bigoted and narrow-minded... And absolutely justly so. The left is not the only group that wishes to misinform in order to push their agenda. This makes the desires of the Christian Right on par with theocratic, Muslim nations ruled by one religion. This, my friends, is a THEOCRACY, not a representative republic and NOT the Constitution provided. Both sides do it and its an egregious use of political noise and distraction. Both sides have decided that peace and unity is not desired. There is a need to speak out against tyranny, but the Tea Partys remedies for this country are poorly misguided. They not only misunderstand the founding precepts but also misunderstand the nature of their own beautiful religion. Some of our forefathers were Christian, yet they allowed room for others to worship how they wish. They lived with religious persecution; they knew how important it was to preserve that freedom not only for themselves but for all. I pray that this may open some eyes and hearts. Ignorance will not bring freedom. So lets stop claiming you wish to restore our country back to what they intended. You have misinterpreted their intent and are pushing your own agenda to be universal law--just as the radical left. If you do not wish to be labeled extremists... Dont conduct yourselves in the manner of extremists.
