I remembered years ago, Becky my horse back riding instructor, had me sit backwards in the saddle for a while and to steer Red, my old Quarter-horse favorite, while facing backwards. She taught me about muscle memory and retraining ourselves to regain muscle awareness. Sitting backwards on a horse, I felt foolish, awkward and untrained. I had to unlearn much of what I had learned to proceed. To use the whole body awareness was the goal. Remembering this, on my latest swim, an extra technique workout, I did an experiment. I tried swimming the whole workout breathing on my "off" side. I immediately felt like a brand new swimmer again...foolish, awkward and untrained. My strong arm was not working right. My less dominant arm was not supporting me. I became aware of weaknesses in symmetry, power and streamlines. I also attempted bilateral every 1 stroke, then every 3. Finally returning to my "On" side felt so much better. I timed myself and did better than ever before.
