I replied with this to the email we received: Dear Emily, While I realise that you are not responsible for these circumstances, I fail to see how the exam does not remain a fair means of assessing the performance of those who did not have access to the questions, yet assessing students knowledge of a module they studied five months earlier, in an already packed exam schedule, is deemed a fair method of assessment. Not only will the resit of F254 impact on revision for other exams, it is likely, certainly in my opinion, that I will be unable to perform as well given such a lengthy period of not studying the module material. I understand these circumstances have arisen unintentionally, but it seems unfair that all students who took the module must pay for an error made by the French department. Surely a fairer solution would be that only the seminar group who received the questions resit the exam, and their marks from January are not taken into consideration, that way the performance of those who did not receive the questions can still be assessed fairly. While this is still not ideal, particularly for the seminar group who received the questions, it seems a better solution than potentially affecting the performance of a larger group of students in the May exam period. Yours, Dan Carabine
